My name is Sangita lama. My birth place is Saralahi, Paramanepur VDC ward no:-2. I am the daughter of the late Bir Bahadur Nyasur Lama and Bindu maya lama. There are seven members [three brothers, two sisters, mother and me] in my family.
My all the family members are engaged in agriculture at village. We did not have sufficient land there. So we go to work for other’s field as well. It was not good earning to live up all members in my family. We hardly manage two meals in a day. So I came to Kathmandu with my brothers and sister-in- law to work at Brick kilns.
My whole family was uneducated. So we started work atShree Machindra Brick Factory at Bungamati. It’s winter seasonal work. I started work with my brother and sister- in- law.
I had to start work at dark early 4 in the morning. I had to dig up the land to take out soil, mixed water in soil, mold the soil to make a raw bricks. It was physically very tough work and water also very cold. Ever I had to work like that for money. Life was very difficult at Brick factory. I had to work early 4 in the morning to late 7 at night. If I did not work like that my family members might not able to provide me food. I could prepare couple of hundreds raw brick in a day.I had to work early 4 in the morning to late 7 at night. If I did not work like that my family members might not able to provide me food.
Many children from surrounding Bungamati village go to schools. I always wish if I could go to school and study and learn. It was my dream and my brother also wanted to admit in a school but he just couldn’t. We have to manage the basic needs first and for that I also had to work as much as possible. I haven’t been to a school before I came to the Little Gems Hostel.
One day Help to Educate staffs came to visit Brick Factory. They saw me working at factory. I was very nervous and just didn’t speak anything when they tried to ask me few questions about my work and family. i was very afraid because it was first time that some strangers came to speak. My brother also there with me working and Help to Educate staffs went to speak with my brother as well. my brother told everything about me. Then they again came to speak with me with my brother. Finally I told them about my condition when they told me that they are helping children who are in need. They asked me whether I wanted to live and study in a hostel.
I denied first even I wanted to study because I had to leave my brother and stay in a hostel. I came to see hostel with my brother before I decide. As soon I been in a hostel, I agreed to stay in and study. I found many friends who warm welcome to me. All friends in hostel are very nice and helped me lot to adjust quickly. Now I have been living in Little Gems Girls Hostel and studying at Future Stars School. I study in the hostel in morning and evening and go to school during the day time. I passed my terminal exams and hoping will pass in further exams. I study very hard and I want to be a Teacher in future.
I will definitely help to people in future. Thank you all for helping and providing good opportunities to learn and study.
Sangita has been living in Little Gems Hostel since she was 11 years old.
